Koral’s Story

On September 29, 2014, 20-year-old Koral Reef Pier, a vibrant and athletic young woman, walked into her local emergency department with increasing weakness on her right side and changes in her vision. Over the previous year, she had experienced a range of vague symptoms like fatigue, headaches, and tingling, but continued to live life to the fullest—celebrating milestones like the birth of her goddaughter, her marriage, and preparing to enter culinary school.

However, her condition took a sudden turn when a neurological exam revealed multiple lesions on her brain, leading to immediate hospitalization. An MRI confirmed these findings, and Koral was transferred to another hospital for further observation and started on anti-seizure medication and steroids.

Despite the severity of her condition, Koral maintained a positive attitude, keeping in touch with friends and family while awaiting critical biopsy results.

By October 1, Koral underwent her first neurosurgery, which allowed doctors to collect tissue for testing. Within days, her health rapidly declined, with increased numbness, loss of mobility, and severe headaches. As her situation worsened, she underwent another emergency surgery to relieve pressure on her brain.

The doctors eventually diagnosed her with a rare infection caused by the Balamuthia mandrillaris amoeba, leading to a transfer to a specialized hospital for advanced treatment. Despite intense medical efforts, including experimental therapies recommended by the CDC, Koral’s condition continued to deteriorate.

After several surgeries and ongoing critical care, Koral’s family was faced with the heartbreaking decision to withdraw life support. She passed away on October 20, 2014, surrounded by her loving family holding both her hands, marking the end of her courageous battle against the rare infection.
